Mark Perry grew up in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. He earned a BA in music and physics at Haverford College and a MA in anthropology and PhD in the history of culture at the University of Chicago. He and his wife and three children live in Beirut, Lebanon, where he teaches social science and cultural studies at Lebanese American University.
